Pickle ornaments were special decorations for many families in Europe where the fir tree was decorated on Christmas Eve. The Pickle was the last ornament to be hung on it among the green boughs with the other ornaments. When the children were allowed to view the tree for the first time, they would begin gleefully searching for the Pickle ornament. The children knew that whoever found that special ornament first would receive an extra little gift left by St. Nicholas for the most observant child.
